Goals
1. Apply the creativity, organization, rigor, and diligence I have honed in school and professionally and channel it into making art, thereby doing work that can sustain me creatively and monetarily.
2. Explore new technology and activities to create artwork that I would be unable to otherwise. For example, I would like to become scuba certified and explore underwater photography.
3. Create a body of work as dynamic and nuanced as water is itself.
Content I'll Create
I want to create images using crabs. In Maryland, where I grew up, they are graphically everywhere and a big part of local culture. I think crabs are important in relation to the theme of Drift. As they grow, they have to shed their exoskeleton and enter a period of dormancy until it grows back. I think this cycle relates elegantly to Ma. I envision creating a series of images related to crabs—not only blue crabs but sand, ghost, hermit, and any others I may find.
I would also like to venture into creating looping gifs or videos of underwater flora or fauna to simulate a virtual aquarium that inspires a meditative state.
I would like to create a photo or gif of the sketch above. I learned a meditation technique to picture yourself at the bottom of the ocean. A ship passes by overhead and you focus on the shadow that the ships slowly cast over you.
The preceding image is a rough sketch of a photo that I would like to create. I want to be at the ocean when it is raining. The sky and the ocean bleed into one another in various shades of gray. I want to position a camera right at the surface of the water. When raindrops hit the ocean water, there is a moment when they bounce up in midair. There is a moment when it looks like there are hundreds of thousands of diamonds suspended just above the ocean. I want to capture that moment.
Sources of Inspiration and Research
(Left) Wave, Night, 1928, and (Right) Ram's Head with Hollyhock, 1935, Georgia O'Keeffe
(Left) Rowan leaves laid around a hole, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, 25 October, 1987, and  (Right) Pebbles around a hole, 1987, Andy Goldsworthy
I include works from Georgia O'Keeffe and Andy Goldsworthy because I envision my own project as inspired by these two artists. For example, in my proposed crab series, I would shoot images of parts of nature like a crab and sea grass. Like Goldsworthy, my work would make use of local flora and fauna, but I would create digital collages similar to an O'Keeffe still life.
